Chapter Six

The sun had already dipped behind the mountains, casting a magical pink and gold glow across the valley. It was a beautiful L.A. evening. The hustle and bustle of the day was beginning to unwind. Jeanie paused on the doorstep, admiring the colorful sky for a brief moment before shouting, “Dawgs!”
Immediately, Xena and Oso came running from the farthest corner of the fence to see what she wanted. Oscar slowly raised himself up from the dog bed at the foot of the porch stairs and walked stiffly toward her. Age may be staking its claim, but that never stopped him from responding to Jeanie’s call.

She scratched his ear. Then patted Xena and Ose. “It’s getting chilly out tonight. Well, maybe not for you so much, Ose, with all that thick brown fur, but nevertheless, it’s time to come in. I have a surprise for all of you.” She stepped to one side and held the door open for them.

Xena walked in first, followed by Oso, and then Oscar, who paused just long enough to grin at Jeanie before entering. “Oscar, this is your first Christmas with us, isn’t it?” she asked, looking down at him tenderly. “Well, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.”
Oscar happily wagged his tail then turned to look into the living room. His eyes widened bigger than the full moon just a few nights before. In just those few hours, Jeanie’s living room had been transformed into a magical wonderland. Everything was ablaze with color.
Lights twinkled everywhere. Red and white striped candy canes hung from silver garlands that sparkled above his head. An animated Santa sat in his sled waving, while saying, “Ho, ho, ho!” The big pine tree looked like nothing Oscar had ever seen. Colored lights flashed on and off, while decorations of every kind hung from the branches. Shimmering strands of silver tinsel looked like icicles. And a beautiful Christmas fairy topped the tree. The entire house smelled fresh, like a pine forest. He had never experienced anything so amazing.

But the decorations weren’t the best part. Oscar blinked back a tear. Hanging on the wall were three bright red stockings, each with a name, XENA, OSCAR, and OSO, neatly printed in golden sparkle over white fur-like trim. Oscar blinked to make sure that what he saw wasn't just his imagination. “No, that stocking is real,” he thought.
Oso was also completely entranced. He turned to Xena, “I have a stocking, too. Look, Xena, I have a stocking.”
“We all have a stocking,” Oscar corrected him, having regained his composure.
“That we do, ‘Seenyor’ Ose and Mr. Oscar!” Xena replied. “Looks like Santa’s gonna be able to find each of us this year. This is so totally cool!”
The ringing of the phone in the kitchen interrupted the moment, and Jeanie dashed to answer it. “Hello?” she said, “Jeanie speaking. Well, hi, Lady Di! How are ya? You need it when? Don’t they know Christmas is in a few days?” The two began chatting as Oso continued to stare at his stocking.
“Theese-eeez-amaaazing,” he told Xena and Oscar. “It’s…it’s muy bonita!”
“Yeeaahhh,” agreed Xena. “It is very beautiful. I think Jeanie’s outdone herself this year. Totally awesome!”
